What You Need to Know About Medicare in 2026
/Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people 65 and older and those under 65 with qualifying disabilities or medical conditions. If you are enrolling or reviewing your coverage this year, here are the key updates.
Part A — Hospital Insurance
Part A covers inpatient hospital care, hospice care, certain home health services, and short-term skilled nursing facility stays. The deductible has increased from $1,676 in 2025 to $1,736 in 2026, a $60 increase.
Part B — Medical Insurance
Part B covers doctor visits, ambulance services, and durable medical equipment. The monthly premium has risen from $185 to $202.90, and the annual deductible is now $283, up from $257.
What's Not Covered
Original Medicare covers 80% of approved costs; you are responsible for the remaining 20%. It does not cover most prescription drugs, vision, dental, hearing services, or long-term care.
Part D Drug Cap
In 2026, out-of-pocket spending for covered prescription drugs is capped at $2,100. Many individuals purchase additional coverage, such as a Medigap plan, Part D drug plan, or Medicare Advantage plan, to help cover remaining costs.
Prescription Payment Plan
Enrollees may now spread out-of-pocket prescription costs into monthly payments rather than paying in full at the pharmacy. You pay $0 at the pharmacy and receive monthly bills. There is no cost to enroll, and no interest or fees apply.
New Protections and Rules
Directory Safeguard
If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan based on inaccurate provider listings, you have three months after coverage begins to switch plans. It is recommended to screenshot or print the provider information you used.
Prior Authorization Pilot
A six-year pilot program began in 2026 in Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington. Certain Part B services may require prior authorization, but inpatient and emergency care are excluded. If you require urgent care, request an expedited review.
Lower Drug Prices
Negotiated pricing for selected high-cost drugs took effect on January 1, 2026. Consult your plan or pharmacist to determine if your medications are included. With the $2,100 out-of-pocket cap, many individuals will see significantly lower annual drug costs.
